Points expiry is optional. Without a points expiry rule, newly awarded points do not expire.
The current rule applies to newly awarded points from paid orders, earning activities, and manual point additions.
Create the rule
- In NASP Rewards, open Points expiry.
- Choose Set up points expiry.
- In the schedule window, choose Annual cutoff or Earning periods.
- Configure the selected schedule on its dedicated create page.
- Review the example dates and, for earning periods, any gap warning in How this affects points.
- Save.
The annual form starts blank. Choose the cutoff month and day, then choose when points should expire. Your first change opens Shopify’s Save Bar.
Choose how long points remain valid
Suppose your annual cutoff is December 31 and points are awarded on October 30, 2026:
- Following year’s cutoff keeps the points valid for at least one year, through December 31, 2027.
- Next annual cutoff makes the points valid through December 31, 2026. Use this when every point should expire at the next cutoff, even when it is close.
- Custom minimum validity lets you choose two or more complete years. With two years selected, the points remain valid through December 31, 2028.
After you complete the annual schedule, the form labels a concrete award date and expiry date as an Example, so you can check the calendar years before you save.
Define earning periods
Choose Earning periods when different parts of the year need different expiry dates.
For example, a two-period schedule can work like this:
- points earned from January 1 through June 30 are usable through December 31 of the same year; and
- points earned from July 1 through December 31 are usable through September 30 of the following year.
You can add one to four earning periods. For each period, choose:
- the inclusive From and To dates under Earned during; and
- the Month, Day, and Year under Expire on.
Earning periods cannot overlap, and a period cannot cross the end of the year. For a same-year expiry, the expiry date cannot be earlier than the end of its earning period.
Use Add earning period or Edit to open the period window. Add to schedule and Apply changes update the schedule shown on the page without saving it. The first staged change opens Shopify’s Save Bar, where you can save or discard the complete draft on both create and edit pages. When editing a period, Remove period removes it from the draft; it is not deleted from the saved rule until you save the complete schedule.
The preview is labeled Example and uses explicit calendar years for each earning period, its expiry, and any uncovered range.
You may leave gaps between earning periods. The preview warns about every uncovered range, but you can still save. Points awarded during a gap do not expire.
How leap years work
NASP Rewards uses a simple 365-day policy calendar. February 29 cannot be selected. During a leap year, February 29 is treated as February 28 for annual cutoffs, earning-period boundaries, and earning-period expiry dates.
This means an earning period that includes February 28 also includes February 29. If points are usable through February 28, they remain usable through February 29 in a leap year and expire when March 1 begins in the store timezone.
Every expiry ends after the selected date in the store timezone shown on the form. Customers see the exact expiry date and time in their Shopify account.
Edit or delete the rule
Changes apply only to points awarded after you save. Points already awarded keep the expiry date they received.
Deleting the rule means newly awarded points no longer expire. Existing points keep their current expiry dates.
To change from an annual cutoff to earning periods, or from earning periods to an annual cutoff, delete the current rule and create a new one. The edit page shows this reminder beside Delete rule.
Which points are used first
When a customer spends points, NASP Rewards uses the points that expire soonest before points with a later expiry or no expiry.
For example, a customer has 100 points expiring in June and 80 expiring in December. If they redeem 150 points, NASP Rewards uses all 100 June points and 50 December points. The remaining 30 points still expire in December.
What customers see
Customer rewards shows every upcoming expiry amount and its exact date and time, plus points that do not expire. The Shopify POS action shows the same groups. If points are used, the earliest expiry amount decreases first.
NASP Rewards checks for expired points every 15 minutes. A balance can therefore update shortly after the cutoff rather than exactly at midnight.
